유태인들에게서 전설로 전해져 내려오는 살아있는 인형 '골렘'을 소재로 한 영화로, 동일한 영화 중에서도 가장 뛰어난 수작으로 손꼽힌다. 각본과 감독, 주연을 한 파울 베게너는 1914년에 만들어진 에서도 주연을 맡은 바 있다. 영화 속 유대인 마을은 놀랍게도 스튜디오에 지어진 거대한 세트이다. 16세기 프라하. 한 유대인 랍비가 유대인들의 처형을 막아주기 위한 수호신으로 거대한 진흙 생명체인 골렘을 만들어 그 속에 생명을 불어넣으려 한다. 그러나 사악한 랍비의 조수는 골렘을 자신의 야욕을 채우기 위한 범죄에 이용할 생각에 골렘을 조종하고 마침내는 랍비의 아름다운 딸까지 납치하도록 시킨다. 그러나 랍비에게서 인간의 감정을 선사 받은 골렘은 결국에는 자신을 악용하는 조수의 사악함에 반기를 들게 된다. 독일 표현주의 무성 환타지 영화의 걸작.

Der Golem is a partially lost 1915 German silent horror film written and directed by Paul Wegener and Henrik Galeen. It was inspired by a Jewish folktale, the most prevalent version of the story involving 16th century Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel who created the Golem to protect his people from antisemites. Wegener claimed the film was based on Gustav Meyrink's 1915 novel The Golem, but, as the movie has little to do with existing Jewish traditions, Troy Howarth states "it is more likely that simply drew upon European folklore".

Production

Co-writer/co-director Henrik Galeen played a major role in the film (which was unusual for him) and years later went on to co-create other silent horror classics, such as F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu (1922) and Paul Leni's Waxworks (1924)

Actress Lyda Salmanova went on to marry Paul Wegener.

The few surviving clips from this film show Wegener in a costume almost identical to the one he used in his later 1920 version, and "show him stumbling around in a manner he would repeat in the later film", according to Troy Howarth.
