Interesting facts

Else is a 2024 French-Belgian science fiction horror film directed by Thibault Emin in his feature directorial debut. Written by Emin and Alice Butaud, with Emma Sandona credited as a collaborator, it stars Matthieu Sampeur and Édith Proust as a couple who shelter in an apartment during an outbreak that causes people to merge with objects around them.

Production

Else is based on Emin's 2007 short film of the same name. The feature project was in development before the COVID-19 pandemic, and Emin said that he and co-writer Alice Butaud subsequently revised parts of the screenplay in light of the shared experience of lockdown. The film was produced by the French company Les Produits Frais and the Belgian company Wrong Men.

In an interview with Première, Emin described combining physical make-up and set effects with digital visual effects. He cited David Lynch's Eraserhead as an important influence on the film's sound design, alongside Blade Runner.
