The Sergeant

Master Sgt. Albert Callan is a war hero and a no-nonsense leader who reforms his previously mismanaged military base. Although Callan seems collected, he struggles as a closeted homosexual. When the sergeant becomes obsessed with his handsome clerk, Tom Swanson, he even disrupts the young man's relationship with his French girlfriend, Solange. Since Swanson isn't receptive to Callan's advances, it creates major tension between the two men.

豆知識

The Sergeant is a 1968 American drama film directed by John Flynn in his directorial debut, and starring Rod Steiger, John Phillip Law, and Ludmila Mikaël. The screenplay by Dennis Murphy is based on his 1958 novel. The film is about a decorated US Army war veteran (Steiger), whose disciplined life is disrupted by his repressed homosexuality towards one of his subordinates (Law).

Production

In 1966, Robert Wise set up a company to produce low-budget films that others would direct. He optioned Dennis Murphy's novel The Sergeant and hired his former assistant, John Flynn, to direct. Flynn says Simon Oakland badly wanted to play the lead, but so did Rod Steiger, who was in much demand at the time, and Steiger played it for less than his usual fee.

Filming took place in Jouars-Pontchartrain and Paris, France.
