타이페이 근교에 사는 이웃 사촌 웨이(Wei)와 쟈이(Jie)는 성격은 극과 극이지만 가장 친한 친구사이다. 둘 다 열 아홉살의 나이에 홀아버지를 모시고 문제아 형제와 투병 중인 쌍둥이 여동생과 함께 살고 있다. 웨이와 쟈이는 구(Gu)가 거느리는 갱 조직에서 빚을 받아내는 해결사로 일하게 된다. 어느날 라이벌 갱 조직의 두목에게 빚을 받으러 간 쟈이와 웨이는 싸움에 휘말리게 되고, 둘은 쫓기는 몸이 되는데...

The Best of Times is a 2002 Taiwanese narrative film directed by Chang Tso-chi. In the film, "Chang Tso-chi wraps the sensibility of urban alienation and lost youth around a typical kids-in-gangland story and infuses it with his own gentle brand of magic realism." The Best of Times was entered into the 59th Venice International Film Festival. It was also selected as the Taiwanese entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 75th Academy Awards, but it was not nominated.

Production

The international exposure of Chang Tso-chi's earlier works helped him acquire investment and explore overseas markets. His third feature film, The Best of Times, was completed with funding from the Japanese broadcasting corporation NHK and attracted the attention of French and Spanish film distributors when shown at the Venice Film Festival.
