옷 가게를 운영하는 메이윈은 이혼남 치펑과 연애 중에 임신 사실을 알게 돼, 초음파 검사 결과를 기다리다가 병원 로비에서 우연히 전 남편 바오슈와 마주친다. 사실 전 남편은 자신의 죄를 뒤집어쓰고 오랜 세월 교도소에 수감되었다가 형기를 마치고 풀려났으며, 암 수술을 받고 입원 중에 그녀와 운명적으로 대면한 것이다. 오갈 데 없는 바오슈는 그녀에게 의탁하지만, 그는 자신의 인생을 망치고 배신까지 한 메이윈을 용서할 수 없다. 갑작스레 등장한 전 남편과의 불편한 동거로 인해 남자 친구와 헤어지게 된 메이윈의 삶은 걷잡을 수 없는 방향으로 치닫는다.

The Sun Rises on Us All is a 2025 Chinese drama film directed by Cai Shangjun, co-written by Han Nianjin and Cai. It follows Meiyun and Baoshu, a former couple, who meet again years after their separation.

Production

From early 2020, Cai Shangjun began co-writing a movie script with his wife, Han Nianjin, under lockdown in China. While his previous works, People Mountain People Sea (2011) and The Conformist (2017), reflect social problems in contemporary China, Cai Shangjun shifted his focus to the lives of ordinary people, in an effort to address the complexity of emotional experiences.

After finishing their first draft, in 2023, Cai began casting actors. Han recommended Xin Zhilei for the role of Meiyun. Cai watched a Chinese adaptation of Prima Facie starring Xin and was impressed by her acting. Seeing Xin on a reality show also made Cai appreciate her candid personality. Yang Chao, the director of Crosscurrent (2016) that starred Xin, shared Xin’s contact information with Cai.

Cai set his film primarily in Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong province in South China. Cai liked Guangzhou for its cultural diversity, commenting “Guangzhou was one of the first beneficiaries of China’s economic reform; its close proximity to Hong Kong also made Guangzhou subject to the influence of popular culture of Hong Kong.” Filming began on July 14, 2024.

Cai worked with South Korean cinematographer Kim Hyun-seok, who previously shot Lee Chang-dong’s Poetry (2010).
