The Miracle
1백년 전, 나폴레옹의 군사들은 스페인을 영국군의 침공으로부터 보호하기 위해 마드리드에 도착한다. 부대의 총대장 마이클(Capt. Michael Stuart: 로저 무어 분)은 전투 중 부상을 당해 인근 수녀원에서 치료를 받게 된다. 테레사(Teresa: 캐롤 베이커 분) 수녀는 마이클의 간호를 맡게되고 마침내 둘은 사랑에 빠진다. 테레사 수녀는 결국 수녀로서의 금기사항을 어기게 되고 그로 인해 갈등을 느낀다. 얼마후 마이클은 완쾌되어 다시 전투에 참가하게 된다. 떠나기 전날 테레사는 마음의 증표로 시계를 건네준다. 그러나 마이클이 떠나자 테레사는 그리움을 잊을 수 없게 되고 수녀원을 빠져나와 마이클을 찾아 나선다. 그러나 테레사가 수녀원을 떠난 이후 수녀원에서는 마리아상이 사라지는 불길한 징조가 일어난다. 한편 수녀원을 빠져나온 테레사는 집시의 마을에서 자신이 증표로 준 시계를 발견하고 마이클이 죽었다고 생각한다. 실의에 빠진 테레사는 집시생활을 시작한다. 하지만 죽은 줄만 알았던 마이클은 극적으로 살아남아 수녀원으로 테레사를 찾아가지만 테레사는 이미 수녀원을 떠난 뒤였다. 스페인의 마드리드를 여행하던 테레사 수녀는 스페인의 한 귀족 청년을 만나 사랑을 나눈다. 그러나 투우경기 중 예기치 않은 사고로 그는 죽음을 당하고 테레사는 자신과 사랑에 빠지는 남자는 모두 죽는다는 과거의 악몽에 다시금 사로잡힌다.

The Miracle is a 1959 American historical fiction film directed by Irving Rapper and starring Carroll Baker and Roger Moore. It is a remake of the 1912 hand-colored, black-and-white film The Miracle, which was in turn a production of the 1911 pantomime play, The Miracle, written by Karl Vollmöller and directed by Max Reinhardt.
Production
The movie was based on a play of the same name produced by Max Reinhardt, who staged it successfully in London in 1911. In 1912 Reinhardt sold the world-wide film rights to Joseph Menchen, who produced the first authorised film of The Miracle in December 1912. Menchen sold the US, Canadian and all-Americas film rights to A. H. Woods for $25,000, who showed the film in New York City in 1913.
A 1924 Reinhardt co-production with Morris Gest in New York starring Lady Diana Cooper aroused interest in a re-make by Metro-Goldwyn Pictures with Menchen's involvement. However, Woods sold his rights to First National Pictures, whose ownership was established in a judgement of the New York Supreme Court in First National Pictures, Inc. and Woods v. Metro-Goldwyn Pictures & Menchen et al., October 1927. Warner Bros.
Various scripts were written over the intervening years by Ulrich Steindorff, Wolfgang Reinhardt, and James Hilton, among others. The film was scheduled for filming in 1942, and was to have been presented in a four-hour version produced by Wolfgang Reinhardt, son of Max Reinhardt. However, the project was shelved until 1958, when a script from Frank Butler was announced as film-able.
While the original play and film had been set in medieval times, this version was set during the Napoleonic era in Spain – its climax involved the Battle of Waterloo, with Torin Thatcher making a cameo appearance as Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (Napoleon is never seen in the film).
Following her success in Baby Doll, Carroll Baker turned down parts in God's Little Acre and Too Much, Too Soon. Warner Bros put her under suspension for refusing the latter; she agreed to play The Miracle for the studio, in part because the role was "sympathetic" and similar to a "feminine Faust".
