제2차 세계 대전의 전운이 감돌던 1939년, 유럽의 발칸 반도에 자리한 마케도니아는 평화롭기만 하다. 툭하면 싸움질에, 도둑질을 일삼는 팀의 공격수 코스타는 마을 최고 부자의 딸이자 마을에서 가장 아름다운 소녀인 유대인 레베카에게 첫눈에 반해 사랑에 빠진다. 하지만 레베카의 아버지는 이들의 사랑을 절대 허락하지 않는다. 결국, 가족을 버리고 사랑을 쫓아 집을 나온 레베카는 코스타와 함께 가난한 신혼 생활을 시작한다. 한편, 오합지졸의 마케도니아 축구팀의 구단주인 드미트리는 최고의 축구팀을 만들기 위해 독일 출신의 스피츠를 감독으로 영입한다. 새 감독인 스피츠는 강하고 엄격한 훈련으로 팀의 기량을 점차 향상시키며 따뜻한 마음으로 선수들에게 다가간다. 마케도니아 축구팀은 매 경기 승승장구를 기록하고, 선수들과 감독은 점차 강한 유대감을 형성한다. 하지만 제2차 세계 대전이 더욱 치열해지면서 나치군이 마케도니아를 점령하게 되자, 이들의 앞날엔 먹구름이 끼기 시작하는데…

The Third Half is a 2012 Macedonian war drama film directed by Darko Mitrevski. It deals with Macedonian football during World War II and the deportation of Jews from Macedonia. It is a story of love during wartime and a country's passion for football. The government of Macedonia considered the film of national interest and funded it with one million euros. The Third Half was selected as the Macedonian entry for Best Foreign Language at the 85th Academy Awards. The film has been criticized in Bulgaria for its depiction of the country and Bulgarians.

Production

The film was supported by the Macedonian Film Fund, the Holocaust Fund of the Jews from Macedonia, the Jewish Community of Macedonia, the Czech State Fund and the then Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski. It was declared a film of national interest by the Macedonian Government. The total budget numbered €2,150,000. The film was shot in Skopje, Bitola and Ohrid. Filming took place between 10 September and 27 October 2011.
