A member of Coast Guard Platoon 23, Private Kang monitors a high-infiltration stretch of beach lined with barbed-wire fencing. Driven by the belief that killing a spy is the highest honor, he waits for a chance to prove his worth.

The Coast Guard is a 2002 South Korean film directed by Kim Ki-duk. The film deals with military atrocities and the absurdities of borders and conflicts.

Production

Filming took place around Jeonju and Seoul, South Korea over a month from June 18, 2002 to July 19, 2002, mostly in chronological order. The actors playing the marines went through a week-long mini-boot camp to help them get acclimated to playing the roles of South Korean marines, the director himself a veteran of the South Korean marine corps.
