중국 본토의 전직 군대 요원이었던 엥(양자경 분)은 홍콩으로 돌아와 특별한 기술이 없는 탓에 영화의 스턴트 우먼으로 일하게 된다. 그곳에서 만난 파트너 썬더볼트(홍금보 분)와 친분을 쌓아가며 엥은 오직 일에만 매달린다. 그러나 화려한 영화세계에 목숨을 던지며 일하는 스턴트의 삶이란 거칠기 그지 없었다. 힘든 스턴트 생활을 탈출하기 위해 앵은 젊고 화려한 사업가 마이크를 만나게된다. 가라오께 사업가로 그와 관계가 깊어진 엥은 스턴트 생활을 그만두고 그와의 삶을 꿈꾸는데.. 그러나 마이크에게 숨겨진 애인이 있다는 사실을 알게 되고 엥은 비탄에 잠긴다. 그런 엥을 썬더볼트는 다시 스턴트의 세계로 끌어들이고 그녀는 뛰어난 스턴트 우먼으로 다시금 이름을 날리게 된다. 한편 썬더볼트는 팀 멤버로 인해 마피아 대부의 싸움에 휘말린다. 이 싸움으로 그는 죽음을 당하자, 엥은 스턴트를 그만 두고 그의 아들 아룽과 새로운 삶을 시작한다.

The Stunt Woman is a 1996 Hong Kong action film directed by Ann Hui, and produced by Raymond Chow, Catherine Hun and Ka-Foo Lau. It stars Michelle Yeoh and Sammo Hung as stunt workers toiling behind the scenes of the film industry with little recognition of the work they do or the danger it entails. The film's postscript details the serious injury which Yeoh suffered after misjudging a stunt leaping from an overpass onto a moving truck, leaving her seriously injured. The film is dedicated to her, and to the other stunt workers who inspired the film.

Production

Yeoh suffered a severe back injury while filming a stunt where she jumped from an overpass onto a moving truck. While shooting the second take, she fell between two mattresses. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was placed in a body cast and treated for several cracked ribs. While convalescing, Yeoh considered retiring from action films. However, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, on a visit to Hong Kong, dissuaded her.

She made her Hollywood debut the following year in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies.
