엘리자베스 헐리, 데니스 리어리 주연의 초호화 경찰 코미디 레이 플루토는 교통 사고로 아내와 자식을 잃고, 또 그 광경을 직접 목격한 끔찍한 기억을 갖고 있다. 경찰인 그는 뉴욕 시의 웃음거리이기도 하다. 범인을 쫓던 도중 아이에게 총을 맞고, 등을 다쳤다. 현재 척추지압사의 치료를 받으며 생활 중이다. 그리고 한 소녀는 자신의 아버지(레이의 아파트의 관리인이기도 한)를 죽이기 위해 살인청부업자를 기용하고… 또 레이가 사는 빌딩에는 두 젊은 남자가 영화 대본을 쓰느라 여념이 없는데….

Double Whammy is a 2001 crime comedy drama film written and directed by Tom DiCillo, and starring Denis Leary, Elizabeth Hurley and Steve Buscemi. Although intended to be released in theaters, it was ultimately distributed direct-to-video.

Production

Financing for the film was a difficult process for writer and director Tom DiCillo. Nick Nolte, Jeff Bridges, and Michael Keaton were all considered for the role of Ray, but DiCillo insisted on Denis Leary for the part. With Leary and Elizabeth Hurley attached to the project, DiCillo still could not secure funding and was turned down by multiple mini-major studios like Sony Pictures Classics, Fine Line Features, The Shooting Gallery, Fox Searchli…

DiCillo said the film was "in reaction to some of the ways people had responded to my films. When the lieutenant says at the beginning, 'Do I have your attention now?,' that's me asking, 'Is that what it takes to get your attention, to have some guy walk into a burger joint and blow people away? Is that what it takes?' I don't see this as just a cop movie. It's about how our emotional life can keep us from seeing things."
