Batianhu deceived nine rural children under the guise of recruiting acrobats, forcing them to beg for money. Lu Wadan, refusing to beg to maintain his dignity, was starved and beaten to death by Batianhu. When Batianhu kidnapped Ling Lan, she managed to persuade him to turn himself in to the authorities.
