1963년 1월, 앨라배마 주지사인 조지 왈라스는 케네디 대통령의 흑백 통합 정책에 반대하는 연설을 한 뒤 대학교의 ‘흑백 통합 수업’을 중지시키려 한다. 학교에 가려는 흑인 학생 두 명을 직접 정문에서 막아 선 것이다. 이에 케네디 대통령은 연방법을 적용해 조지 왈라스를 저지했고, 결국 두 학생은 학교에 들어갈 수 있었다. 영화는 조지 왈라스와 학생들, 헨리 그래험 장군과 앨라배마 주 방위군과의 대치 등 긴장 넘치는 순간을 바로 옆에서 생생히 기록한다.

Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment is an 1963 American direct cinema documentary film directed by Robert Drew. The film centers on the University of Alabama's "Stand in the Schoolhouse Door" integration crisis of June 1963. Drew and the other filmmakers, including D.A. Pennebaker and Richard Leacock, were given expanded access to key areas, including United States President John F. Kennedy's Oval Office and the homes of United States Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and Governor George Wallace of Alabama. The film first aired on the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) as an installment of Close-Up! four months after the incident, on October 28, 1963.
