Iceman is a 1984 American science fiction drama film from Universal Pictures directed by Fred Schepisi, written by John Drimmer and Chip Proser, and starring Timothy Hutton, Lindsay Crouse, and John Lone. The film follows the discovery of a prehistoric Neanderthal caveman frozen in ice and what happens after scientists are able to bring him back to life. It was filmed in color with Dolby sound and has a running time of 100 minutes. The DVD version was released in 2004.

Production

Iceman was a project linked to director Norman Jewison for several years in the 1970s. Jewison still produced the film, which was eventually made under Australian director Fred Schepisi.

A Daily Variety report in November 1980 named Jewison as the likely director, and in September 1981 Variety reported that John Irvin would direct. Universal took over the project in turnaround from United Artists in December 1981, and Schepisi was hired in September 1982, when the budget was reported at $10 million. Iceman was Schepisi's next film after the western Barbarosa (1982). Principal photography began on February 21, 1983.

Exteriors were filmed in British Columbia and Manitoba. The end credits state that the film was shot at Panorama Studios and on location in Churchill, Manitoba, and Stewart, British Columbia. Schepisi worked with Australian collaborators Ian Baker for cinematography and Bruce Smeaton for music.

Michael Westmore created the film's makeup, with Michèle Burke as special makeup artist. Jeffrey Knight of ZekeFilm wrote that Westmore's design gives John Lone a primitive appearance without hiding his face or his expressive eyes, and that Lone, who trained at a Beijing opera school as a child, plays the role mostly through body language.
