康熙晚年，众太子觊觎帝位，其中四太子胤祯与十四太子胤禵相争最激烈。康熙预立密诏传位于十四子，胤祯乃命年羹尧设法篡位于十四子，胤祯后以大将军职位。年助雍正得帝位后，受命西征，战无不胜，声名远播，雍正引以为忧，乃借机于一日之内连年羹尧十八级，由大将军降为城门的“外委把总”。年与志士密谋起义，却因事泄络被雍正所杀。
