과거에는 촉망 받는 카레이서였지만 지금은 평범한 운전강사로 활동하고 있는 로버츠는 반복되는 일상에 지루함을 느끼고 있다. 그러나 어느 날 갑자기 운전 수업 수강생 사이먼이 은행 강도로 돌변, 졸지에 공범이 되는 사건이 벌어진다. 의도치 않게 경찰, 그리고 폭력 조직과의 쫓고 쫓기는 위험천만 도주극을 펼치게 된 로버츠! 그리고 목숨을 건 드라이빙 속에서 로버츠는 잊고 있던 카레이서로서의 기억을 되살린다. 점점 더 빠르고 점점 더 위험해지는 로버츠의 카레이싱을 따라 어둠 속에 가려져 있던 사이먼의 기막힌 복수극의 내막이 드러난다!

Drive Hard is a 2014 Australian buddy action film directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith and written by Chad Law, Evan Law, and Trenchard-Smith. A professional thief takes a former race car driver hostage and forces him to drive his getaway car.

Production

Brian Trenchard-Smith described the film as:

An offbeat action comedy tailored to John Cusack and Thomas Jane’s screen personas. I put them together and had some fun with the material. If audiences like Cusack and Jane they’ll enjoy seeing them spark off each other. It’s a nod towards Midnight Run (1988) and other buddy comedies with regular injections of action. It has the stunt of the near miss as opposed to the Fast of the Furious destruction.

The film was originally set in the United States and written as a vehicle for Jean-Claude Van Damme, who dropped out. Trenchard Smith says he subsequently rewrote the script:

There was a window of availability for John Cusack, so if were able to quickly retool it for him and for Australia we could have him, so that’s what I did. We changed the tone and went through the script to make considerable changes to the characters that would work much better, things the Van Damme version didn’t have at all... When you’ve got two great actors who have improvisational ability you might as well plug into it.

The film began shooting on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia on 6 June 2013. The shoot took only 18 days.
