在韩国遥远的西海岸上有一个几乎与世隔绝的小村庄，这裡的村民以捕鱼為生，世代信奉海为神灵的他们，有一个祖传的观念：如果某人在海洋中淹死，他的灵魂在下一个人死之前，不能够离开。电影就描述由一个渔夫的溺死开始的一系列悲惨事件。
