Journey to Italy

Journey to Italy (1954)

Viaggio in Italia

Married for eight years with no children, Brits Katherine and Alex Joyce are driving to Italy, their ultimate destination just outside of Naples to sell the villa they have just inherited from his uncle, the villa where they will be staying during their time there. On the drive, they come to the realization that this trip marks the first time that they have truly been alone together, and as such don't really know one another in the true sense.

Interesting facts

  • Based on: Duo

Journey to Italy, also known as Voyage to Italy, is a 1954 drama film directed by Roberto Rossellini. Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders play a married English couple on a trip to Italy, during which they spend some time apart and evaluate the strength of their bond.

Production

The film originally was intended as an adaptation of the French writer Colette's novel Duo; Rossellini was, however, unable to get the rights to the novel and so was forced to draft a screenplay that differed sufficiently from the novel.

Rossellini's directorial style was very unusual. The actors did not receive their lines until shortly before filming of a particular scene, which left them little if any chance to prepare or rehearse. George Sanders' autobiography Memoirs of a Professional Cad (1960) tellingly describes Rossellini's methods of direction and their effects on the actors and production team.

Filming locations of tourist sites in Italy include Naples National Archaeological Museum, the Phlegraean Fields, the Fontanelle cemetery, and excavations at Pompei. The procession in Naples was for Saint Gennaro.
