맨해튼의 고층 빌딩 옥상에서 일광욕을 즐기던 여인과 창문을 닦던 인부가 비명 한 번 남기지 못한 채 사라지고, 거리에는 하늘에서 떨어진 핏방울이 흩뿌려진다. 같은 무렵 도시 곳곳에서는 고대 제물 의식을 연상시키는 끔찍한 살인 사건이 잇따라 일어난다. 사건을 맡은 형사 셰퍼드는 이 기이한 일들의 배후에 아즈텍의 날개 달린 뱀신 케찰코아틀이 있다는 믿기 힘든 가설에 다가선다. 한편 한물간 재즈 피아니스트이자 좀도둑인 지미 퀸은 보석 강도 사건에 휘말려 도망치다가 크라이슬러 빌딩 꼭대기에서 거대한 둥지를 발견한다. 인생 역전의 기회를 직감한 지미는 괴물의 위치를 알려 주는 대가로 경찰에게 터무니없는 거래를 제안하는데...

Q – The Winged Serpent is a 1982 American monster horror crime movie written, co-produced and directed by Larry Cohen and starring Michael Moriarty, Candy Clark, David Carradine and Richard Roundtree. The film follows a petty swindler (Moriarty) who accidentally intrudes in a case involving a winged deity monster that poses a threat to New York City. He is the only person who has information that can help the police to stop the creature.

Production

Q – The Winged Serpent was shot on location in and around New York City's Chrysler Building and uses the interior of the building's tower crown as a primary location. Though the owners initially refused to secure the building to the movie's production, they finally relented and agreed after they were offered an $18,000 (equivalent to $60,000 in 2025) fee. The overall production budget was over $1.1 million.

According to writer-director Larry Cohen, Michael Moriarty's character Jimmy Quinn was not a failed piano player in the script, but when Cohen discovered Moriarty wrote and played music, he used it: "I wrote the extra scene where he auditions and fails to get the job. After that we just kept building on that".
