공장에서 일하는 스물 한 살의 하얌은 어머니와 여동생, 양아버지와 함께 가난한 동네에 살고 있다. 하얌은 자신에게 호감을 보이는 공장의 새로운 감독관 살라에게 사랑을 느끼고, 그도 자신을 사랑한다고 믿는다. 하지만 사랑에 푹 빠진 하얌과 달리, 살라는 둘 사이의 계층 차이를 일깨우며 그녀와의 관계를 부정한다. 그러던 중 공장 안에서 임신 테스트기가 발견되자, 하얌의 동료와 가족들은 죄를 지었다며 그녀를 비난한다. 하얌은 자신의 처지를 변명하는 대신, 독립적인 여성을 용납하지 않는 사회가 요구하는 엄청난 대가를 당당히 치르기로 결심한다.

Factory Girl is an Egyptian romantic drama film directed by Mohamed Khan. The film premiered at the Dubai International Film Festival in December 2013. It was selected as the Egyptian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, but was not nominated.

Production

The film was funded by DIFF's Enjaaz fund, the Abu Dhabi Film Festival's SANAD fund, the Global Film Initiative, Women in Film Foundation, German's GIZ institution and the Egyptian Ministry of Culture's Filmmaking Fund.

Cinematography was done by the Egyptian Mahmoud Lotfi, who previously gained notoriety for his work on Coming Forth by Day.
