사냥을 즐기고 주사위 놀이에 빠져 사는 두 왕, 란지트와 소한. 겉으로는 친구처럼 어울리지만 소한은 란지트의 왕국을 손에 넣기 위해 은밀히 음모를 꾸미고 있다. 호랑이 사냥 중 뜻밖의 사고로 부상을 입은 란지트는 숲속 은둔자의 오두막에서 그의 딸 수니타의 간호를 받으며 사랑에 빠진다. 그러나 수니타의 아름다움에 눈이 먼 소한 역시 그녀를 탐하게 되고, 두 왕은 한 여인을 두고 운명을 건 주사위 승부를 벌이기로 한다. 사랑과 왕국, 그리고 자유까지 걸린 이 승부에서 속임수에 능한 소한의 손길이 주사위를 조종하기 시작하는데... 과연 란지트는 빼앗긴 모든 것을 되찾고 수니타와의 사랑을 지킬 수 있을까.

A Throw of Dice is a 1929 silent film by German-born director Franz Osten, based on an episode from the Indian epic Mahabharata.

Production

A Throw of Dice, the third Indian film by Franz Osten, is considered by some to be his greatest achievement. The silent film was shot in black and white on 35mm film. It contains thousands of cast members and animals, including 10,000 extras, 1,000 horses and scores of elephants and tigers. The film was shot on location in Rajasthan.

Osten made 19 films in India from 1926 to 1939, and A Throw of Dice formed the final part of a trilogy of Indo-German productions by Osten and Indian actor-producer Himanshu Rai. The other two films in the trilogy are Prem Sanyas (1925) and Shiraz (1928). After a gap, Osten returned to India and worked on Bombay Talkies with Rai.
