한 잔의 차에 담긴 미학, 천하를 쥔 권력과 마주하다
전국 시대를 평정하고 천하인이 된 도요토미 히데요시의 곁에는 그가 누구보다 아끼는 다도의 스승 센노 리큐가 있다. 소박함 속에서 아름다움을 찾는 리큐의 다도는 무장들의 마음을 사로잡고, 히데요시 역시 그를 깊이 신뢰하며 다실 안에서만큼은 권력자가 아닌 한 사람의 제자로서 그를 대한다. 그러나 화려함과 권세를 과시하려는 히데요시와 절제된 아름다움을 지키려는 리큐 사이에는 조금씩 보이지 않는 균열이 생겨난다. 정치에 대한 리큐의 영향력을 경계하는 측근들의 견제가 거세지고, 히데요시가 조선과 명나라를 정벌하겠다는 야망을 드러내면서 두 사람의 관계는 돌이킬 수 없는 긴장 속으로 빠져든다. 천하를 손에 넣은 권력과 누구에게도 굽히지 않는 예술가의 정신, 고요한 다실 안에서 두 사람의 팽팽한 대결이 시작되는데...

Rikyu is a 1989 Japanese drama film about Sen no Rikyū, a 16th-century master of the Japanese tea ceremony, directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara. The film was adapted from the novel Hideyoshi to Rikyu by Yaeko Nogami. The film was ranked the 7th best film of the year by Kinema Junpo in 1989. It was one of two major biographical drama films directed in 1989 about the life of Sen no Rikyū, the other being Death of a Tea Master by Kei Kumai. Rikyu was selected as the Japanese entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 62nd Academy Awards but was not accepted as a nominee.
Background
Director Teshigahara, himself a master and teacher of the Japanese traditional art of ikebana, brings the viewer into appreciation and deep sympathy for Rikyu's aesthetic idealism and his careful diplomatic efforts to avoid excessive entanglement in political affairs. The film itself is very studied in its aestheticism, and very expressive of the shocking force of life intruding into the guarded hermetic space of the artist/idealist.
