Production

The Forbidden Room was based on the 1966 novel Un'anima persa by Italian author Giovanni Arpino. Director Dino Risi had adapted a previous novel by Arpino, in Scent of a Woman (1974).

Risi's adaptation of Un'anima persa changed the novel's location from Turin to Venice and changed the names, features and characteristics of some characters such as Tino's uncle and aunt Galla.
