권세 높은 명문가 가씨 집안의 귀한 도련님 가보옥은 태어날 때 입에 신비로운 옥을 물고 나온 아이로, 집안 어른들의 사랑을 한 몸에 받으며 자란다. 어느 날 부모를 여의고 의탁할 곳을 찾아 온 외사촌 누이 임대옥이 가씨 집안에 들어오고, 처음 보는 순간부터 오래전 어디선가 만난 듯한 그녀에게 보옥은 깊이 끌린다. 시를 읊고 꽃을 묻으며 대관원에서 함께 지내는 사이 두 사람은 누구보다 서로를 잘 아는 사이가 되지만, 섬세하고 병약한 대옥은 쉽게 상처받고 보옥의 마음을 끝없이 의심한다. 게다가 금 목걸이를 지닌 단아한 사촌 설보채가 나타나 금과 옥이 맺어질 인연이라는 말이 집안에 돌기 시작한다. 가문은 보옥의 혼사를 따로 계획하고 있다. 보옥과 대옥의 사랑은 그 뜻을 넘어설 수 있을까...

The Dream of the Red Chamber is a 1977 film adaptation of the 18th century Chinese novel of the same name by Cao Xueqin. It stars Brigitte Lin as protagonist Jia Baoyu, and Sylvia Chang as his cousin Lin Daiyu. The film is told in the style of Huangmei Opera, and follows the style's tradition of cross-gender acting, where a female actor portrays a male character. This is the second adaptation of the novel from the Shaw Brothers, the first being Dream of the Red Chamber (1963) starring Betty Loh Ti.

Production

Director Li Han-hsiang initially approached Brigitte Lin for the role of Lin Daiyu, after seeing her in period costume. Sylvia Chang was initially cast as Jia Baoyu, but swapped roles with Lin when Li saw the latter "...walking down a hallway in jeans and a striped shirt, looking down, and was inspired to recast her, feeling she had the look of a classic scholarly, handsome man.".
