헤어조크 감독이 24세에 연출한 장편 데뷔작으로 제2차 세계대전 점령기 시 그리스의 어느 섬에 머물게 된 독일 장병 스트로첵이 광기에 빠져드는 이야기이다. 군수품 창고를 지키는 임무를 받은 스트로첵은 아무 일도 일어나지 않는 섬의 평온함에 어느 날 발작을 일으키고 섬의 모든 사람에게 이유 없는 반항을 감행하게 된다. 영화는 "강박관념에 사로잡힌 주인공, 매혹적이면서도 동시에 위압적인 자연의 풍경, '순환'하는 원의 이미지 등" 향후 헤어조크적이라고 불린 모티프들을 보여주고 있다. Signs of Life is a 1968 feature film written, directed, and produced by Werner Herzog. It was his first feature film, and his first major commercial and critical success. The story is roughly based on the short story "Der Tolle Invalide auf dem Fort Ratonneau" by Achim von Arnim.

Production

The fortress which gives the film's main setting is a real 14th-century fortress built by the Knights Hospitaller. Herzog's grandfather, Rudolf Herzog, lived and worked for several years as an archaeologist at this site, and published translations of the ancient Greek engravings which appear in the film.

During several shots, Peter Brogle could only be filmed from the waist up after he had been injured in a tight-rope accident and spent several months in a walking cast. The man who appears as a pianist in one scene is keyboardist Florian Fricke of Popol Vuh, who composed and performed the music for many of Herzog's later films.
