Production

Boxing Day was created by Aml Ameen in his directorial debut, loosely based on his own family. He co-wrote the script with Bruce Purnell. He originally planned to fund it himself to get it off the ground, but he met agents at Idris Elba's wedding who sent his script out to BFI and Film4. It is also Leigh-Anne Pinnock's acting debut. She joined the cast after being recommended to Ameen by Purnell.

The film's production began in late summer of 2020. The movie was filmed on location in London for six weeks in November and December. They filmed during the COVID-19 lockdown in locations like South Bank, Carnaby Street, and The Jazz Café.
