외인부대 하사관이며, 수려한 외모로 수많은 여성들의 마음을 쥐락펴락하는 호색한 루시앙이 지중해 휴양 도시 칸에서 아름다운 마들렌을 만난다. 루시앙에게서 돈을 빌려 도박을 하던 마들렌은 모든 돈을 잃고, 루시앙의 곁에서도 떠나 버리는데, 루시앙은 이미 그녀를 깊이 사랑하고 있었다. 몇 년 후, 전역한 루시앙은 파리에서 허름한 카페를 운영하는데, 그는 여전히 마들렌을 잊지 못하고 있다. 동명 소설을 바탕으로 한 짜임새 있는 멜로드라마로, 데뷔 후 다큐멘터리, 장편, 단편 등 다양한 작업을 이어 왔던 그레미용에게 큰 상업적 성공을 안겨 준 작품이다. Lady Killer is a 1937 French drama film directed by Jean Grémillon and starring Jean Gabin, Mireille Balin and Marguerite Deval. It has been classified as both a film noir and an entry into the poetic realist group of films of the late 1930s. It was produced by the German company UFA in conjunction with its own French subsidiary ACE. Like Port of Shadows it drew on the tradition of German expressionism in its lighting and set design, although the Nazi authorities were opposed to the expressionist style.
