폭격이 쏟아지는 밤, 불길 속으로 걸어 들어간 사람들

제2차 세계대전, 독일군의 공습이 이어지는 런던. 신참 소방대원 바렛이 부두 인근 보조소방대 14Y 분소에 배치된다. 동료들과 어울리며 느긋한 오후를 보낸 것도 잠시, 밤이 되자 공습경보가 울리고 대원들은 탄약을 가득 실은 선박 바로 옆 창고에서 치솟은 거대한 화재 현장으로 출동한다. 머리 위로 폭격기가 날고 거센 바람이 불길을 키우는 가운데, 평범한 이웃이던 이들은 도시를 지키기 위한 사투에 뛰어든다. 실제 소방대원들이 직접 출연해 대공습 시기 소방관들의 하루를 사실적으로 재현한다.

Fires Were Started is a 1943 British film written and directed by Humphrey Jennings and produced by the Crown Film Unit. Filmed in documentary style, it shows the lives of firefighters over one day and night of the Blitz during the Second World War. The film uses actual firemen rather than professional actors.

Production

Exterior shots were filmed on location, while the interior scenes were shot at Pinewood Studios. Jennings's first cut of the film was titled I Was a Fireman and ran to 74 minutes. This was cut down to 65 minutes and released as Fires Were Started.
