어린 시절, 달리는 차 안에서 어머니가 낯선 남자와 함께 있는 모습을 목격한 소녀 캐시는 그 순간 벌어진 참혹한 사고로 어머니를 잃는다. 유리 조각에 갈라진 어머니의 목과 "네가 엄마를 죽였다"는 아버지의 절규는 지울 수 없는 악몽으로 남는다. 십수 년 후, 이름을 헬렌으로 바꾸고 무대에 서는 배우가 된 그녀는 오디션에서 만난 인기 드라마 배우 테리와 함께 새 연극의 주역을 따내며 새로운 삶을 꿈꾼다. 그러나 밤마다 되살아나는 깨진 유리의 환영은 그녀를 놓아주지 않고, 연출가의 강압적인 지도는 봉인해둔 기억을 흔들어 놓는다. 그 무렵 극장 주변에서는 배우와 스태프들이 하나씩 날카로운 유리 조각에 찔려 처참하게 살해되기 시작한다. 개막일이 다가올수록 무대 뒤의 공포는 짙어지고, 헬렌은 자신도 알지 못하는 무언가가 어둠 속에서 눈을 뜨고 있음을 느낀다. 이 살인의 정체는 무엇이고, 그녀는 마지막 막이 내릴 때까지 무대 위에 서 있을 수 있을까.

Nightmares is a 1980 Australian slasher film, directed by John D. Lamond and was Gary Sweet's feature film debut.

Production

The film was shot by Lamond immediately after Pacific Banana (late 1979—early 1980) and edited at the same time. Lamond:

Nightmares should have been a lot better. We used the Steadicam camera for the first time in Australia on that. It was all right, but it didn't have any story. The technique was all right. Brian May's music was great. It was dumped by the distributor. No-one tried, nobody did anything. But it should have been better. Because it was a real quickie.

Lamond says it was John Michael Howson's idea to set the movie in a theatre.

The film features a bitchy theatre critic called Bennett Collingswood (played by John Michael Howson) who many observers felt was a veiled attack on Colin Bennett, film critic of The Age who was often critical of Australian films.

It was the first professional job for Gary Sweet who later called the film "terrible, diabolical" but says it got him thinking "acting was, you know, all right."
