부와 명예 어느 것하나 부족함이 없는 파우스트. 하지만 그는 메피스토를 종으로 삼아 원하는 모든 것을 얻는 조건으로 자신의 영혼을 악마 루시퍼에게 팔아버린다. 악마의 힘을 빌어 시간과 장소를 넘나 들며 자신이 원하는 것은 무엇이든 손에 넣고 마술을 부리고 여자를 탐하는 등 온갖 타락한 생활을 즐긴다. 신화에서 나오는 여신, 타락한 창녀, 트로이의 헬렌 세상의 모든 여인이 그에게 마음을 빼앗기고 굴복한다. 하지만 이 모든 것이 진정한 삶의 의미와 사랑이 아님을 깨닫게 된가. 결국 시간이 모두 흘러 자신의 어리석음을 후회해 보지만 이미 피로써 맺은 악마의 계약을 어기지 못한다. 지옥의 문은 열리고 그가 사랑했던 여인에 의해 지옥으로 끌려간다.

Doctor Faustus is a 1967 British horror film adaptation of the 1588 Christopher Marlowe play The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus directed by Richard Burton and Nevill Coghill. The first theatrical film version of a Marlowe play, it was the only film directed by Burton or Coghill, Burton's Oxford University mentor. It starred Burton as the title character Faustus, with Elizabeth Taylor appearing in a silent role as Helen of Troy. The film is a permanent record of a stage production that Burton starred in and staged with Coghill at the Oxford University Dramatic Society in 1966.
