Herman van Ulzen completed his acting training at the State University of Music and Theater in Heidelberg. Subsequently, he worked at numerous German-language theaters, including the Zimmertheater Heidelberg, the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, the Münchner Volkstheater, and the Comödie Dresden.

From the mid-1970s onward, van Ulzen appeared regularly in film and television productions. He made his television debut in 1975 in the series *Autoverleih Pistulla*.
