肯·雅各布斯是20世纪60年代和70年代美国电影先锋派的先驱，也是战后实验电影领域的核心人物。从20世纪50年代末他的早期电影到近期在数字视频方面的实验，他的探索与创新影响了无数艺术家。
雅各布斯出生于纽约，毕业于城市大学后，投身于20世纪60年代的市中心艺术圈，当时圈子里有艺术家罗伯特·劳森伯格、安迪·沃霍尔，垮掉的一代作家艾伦·金斯堡、杰克·凯鲁亚克，还有特里莎·布朗和伊冯·雷纳的实验剧团。尽管雅各布斯曾师从汉斯·霍夫曼学习绘画，但他很快就转向了电影领域，在乔纳斯·梅卡斯、霍利斯·弗兰普顿等激进电影人身上找到了志同道合的伙伴。他早年与杰克·史密斯的友谊促成了多次合作，包括开创性的地下电影《金发眼镜蛇》（乔纳斯·梅卡斯称其为“波德莱尔式电影的杰作”）和《幸福的小刺痛》，以及在普罗温斯敦海滩上演的现场表演《人类残骸回顾》。
